Beach Day paintings

My new collection of abstract bird paintings, Beach Day, is out now. This collection of work captures the rhythm of shorebirds and the coastal landscape that define summers on the East Coast.

Some of the things that makes this collection special to me are the combination of painting en plein air and using saltwater & natural pigments from PEI. I think that painting these pieces on the beach and using the ocean water and natural pigments make the work even more connected to the coast.

Each piece in Beach Day is painted on raw canvas with various media, including acrylic paint, pastels, graphite, and even coloured pencils. I had so much fun with the abstract elements in these paintings, letting loose with scribbles and marks before layering on the more recognizable shapes of shorebirds and seashells. I focused on things that feel like summer to me: piping plovers, sandpipers, seagulls, along with oysters, scallops, and mussels. These paintings are little snapshots of beach days spent searching for treasures in the sand and watching plovers dart in and out of the sea grass and waves.

Beach Day paintings are available now.
